Reduce Inflammation with Medical Cannabis
Rest the Voice:
Vocal rest is key to recovery. Avoid talking, whispering, or using the voice in any way for a few days to allow the vocal cords to heal. If you need to communicate, use writing or text instead.
Hydration:
Drink 8-10 cups of water daily to ensure optimal hydration of the vocal cords. Warm water with 1-2 teaspoons of honey and half a lemon (rich in vitamin C) can be soothing and helps reduce throat irritation. Honey provides antimicrobial effects, while lemon supports immune function and soothes inflammation.
Myers' Cocktail:
Vitamin C: 1,000-2,000 mg (for antioxidant and immune support)
Magnesium: 1-2 grams (for muscle relaxation, including vocal cord muscles)
Calcium gluconate: 100-200 mg (helps with neuromuscular function)
Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin): 1,000 mcg (for energy and nerve function)
Vitamin B complex (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6): 1 mL of each B vitamin (promotes energy metabolism and cellular function)
Normal saline or sterile water: 100-200 mL for hydration
Humidification:
Inhaling steam 2-3 times per day for 5-10 minutes can help moisten the throat and reduce inflammation. Adding essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint to the steam can further enhance anti-inflammatory and decongestant effects.
Gargling with Saltwater:
Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz (1 cup) of warm water and gargle for 15-30 seconds, 2-3 times per day. Saltwater acts as an antiseptic and helps reduce swelling in the larynx.
Herbal Teas:
Chamomile Tea: Drink 1-2 cups daily. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that can help relieve irritation.
Slippery Elm Tea: Use 2-3 grams of slippery elm bark steeped in hot water. This tea forms a gel-like coating on the throat, providing relief from dryness and irritation.
Licorice Root Tea: Use 1-2 teaspoons of dried licorice root in hot water, steeped for 5-10 minutes. Licorice root can also act as an expectorant and soothe throat irritation.
Honey and Ginger:
Make a ginger tea by boiling 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger slices in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon of honey and drink 2-3 times daily. Honey acts as a natural antibacterial agent, while ginger provides anti-inflammatory effects by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (Srivastava & Mustafa, 1992, J Ethnopharmacol).
Avoid Irritants:
Stay away from smoke, dust, allergens, or dry air that can exacerbate laryngitis. Use a humidifier if the air is dry, and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate the vocal cords.
Warm Compresses:
Apply a warm compress to the throat for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day, to increase blood circulation and relieve discomfort.
THC
1:1 Tincture for Gargling:
Dilute 1-2 drops of a THC
1:1 tincture in ¼ cup of warm water and gargle for 15-30 seconds, 2-3 times a day. The anti-inflammatory effects of both THC and CBD can reduce swelling and provide analgesic relief. Avoid swallowing the solution to limit systemic effects of THC, especially at higher doses.
Vitamin C:
500-1000 mg of Vitamin C daily supports immune function and helps reduce inflammation in the throat. You can take this as a supplement or through natural sources like citrus fruits, kiwi, or bell peppers.
Turmeric:
Add ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder to a warm drink like milk or tea. Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, has potent anti-inflammatory properties ⟶ ⬇ NF-κB signaling ⟶ ⬇ pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IL-6 (Gupta et al., 2013, Adv Exp Med Biol). Drink this 1-2 times per day to reduce throat irritation and support healing.
Rest your voice by avoiding all speaking or whispering for a few days to allow the vocal cords to heal. Stay hydrated by drinking 8-10 cups of water daily, and try warm water with honey, lemon and teaspoon of turmeric for added soothing effects. Myers' Cocktail for additional immune support: 1,000-2,000 mg Vitamin C, 1-2 g magnesium, 100-200 mg calcium , B vitamins . Humidify your environment and inhale steam 2-3 times daily, adding eucalyptus oil if desired. Gargle with a ½ teaspoon salt in warm water 2-3 times per day, and drink chamomile tea for throat relief. Add 2-4 drops of THC:CBD 1:1 tincture to warm water with teaspoon of olive or coconut oil for gargling - safe to swallow or not swallow, based on if you need the additional effects via oral route. If not improved within 2 days; consider more potent OTC meds - Ibuprofen or naproxen, not both or medrol dose pack, if needed more immediate relief.
